Data on the structure and reactivity of nitreniurn ions of various types are generalised and described systematically. Various reaction pathways of these reactive intermediates dictated by their electronic structure are analysed. The attention is focused on the results of "direct" observation of nitreniurn ions and the role of singlet-triplet conversion of these ions in chemical reactions.
