Abstract:
2,6-Di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol is formed in high yield by reaction of 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol with methanol in the presence of alkali and ZnO. In the reaction with methanol-d4, the deuteromethylation process is accompanied by hydrogen-deuterium exchange in the tert-butyl groups. With 2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenol as an example, the isotope exchange was shown to involve only the tert-butyl groups located ortho with respect to the hydroxy group. Conditions were found for replacement of hydrogen in position 4 of 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol by deuterium.
