A verbanone reaction with acetonitrile under Ritter reaction conditions led to a selective formation of o-menthane derivatives, a mixture of stereoisomeric cis- and trans-8-acetamido-o-menthones. The streoisomers ratio depends on the reaction conditions and the character of acid catalyst used.
