Abstract: Published data on the comparative activity of the nitro group, fluorine and chlorine towards nucleophilic aromatic substitution are generalised and described systematically. The factors influencing the relative activity of these substituents, including substrate structure, the nature of the nucleophile and the reaction conditions are discussed. The synthetic applications and the possible mechanisms of nucleophilic replacement of the nitro group, fluorine and chlorine in aromatic compounds are considered.
