Abstract: New polymethine dyes, 4-methyl-6-tert-butylthioflavilium derivatives, as a basis for optical recording media have been synthesized and their electronic absorption spectra in solutions and in PMMA polymer film have been studied. Increased concentration of the dye in PMMA matrix has been shown to lead after drying up of the film to dye aggregation. The aggregates of non-symmetric dyes show the hypsochromic shift as compared to the acetonitrile solution of the dyes (DELTAlambda(max) approximately 110 nm). The symmetric dye aggregation leads to the batochromic shift in the spectrum (DELTAlambda(max) approximately 175 nm). The relative photostability of these dye films has been determinated on irradiation with the xenone-lamp (500 000 lx).
