Abstract: The polarizability of fullerene molecules in the gas phase was measured experimentally at a wavelength of 540 nm. The measurements have been carried out in a free molecular flow of fullerene by the use of Rayleigh light scattering. The absolute number density of fullerene has been measured by a quartz balance. The value of the polarizability proved to be 10(-21) cm3, that is an order of magnitude greater than the one calculated by Fowler, Lazaretti and Zanasi.
