Abstract: Nitration of aromatic compounds with nitrous acid was studied under conditions of phase-transfer catalysis. Nitroarenes are formed in the system benzene-aqueous sulfuric acid by the electrophilic mechanism of phase-transfer catalysis. Noncatalytic process sometimes does not occur. The stoichiometry of the reaction depends on the amount of atmospheric oxygen in a closed system.
