Abstract: As shown in this review, the methods for preparation of TMHQ based on the symmetrically substituted trimethylphenol I compare favorably with those based on more traditional routes [94], which are based on unsymmetrically substituted trimethylphenols as the starting material. Today, a number of chemical methods both for the oxidation of mesitol I to quinol II and for the rearrangement of the latter to TMHQ exist, which are suitable for industrial-scale applications. A limiting factor in the practical application of Scheme 1 is the absence of simple and efficient methods for the preparation of mesitol I. The electrochemical methods for the oxidation of mesitol I deserve more attention in order to increase their efficiency since this could lead to the replacement of the heretofore more efficient, but ecologically more problematic and potentially dangerous, chemical methods for oxidation. Furthermore, detailed studies on the acid-catalyzed rearrangement of II could lead to the development of processes that do not require an inert atmosphere, which is the case when this reaction is carried out using base catalysis. The practical realization of Scheme 1 can be further improved by more research concentrating on the problems and limitations mentioned. Doubtless, most of the still existing problems will be solved in the near future. © 1992 Plenum Publishing Corporation.
