The reaction of urea or thiocyanates in acidic media with N-(1-naphthyl)-α (and β)-methyl-β-alanines was used to synthesize 5(and 6)-methyl-1-(1-naphthyl)dihydrouracils and 5(and 6)-methyl-1-(1-naphthyl)-2-thioxodihydrouracils. The conformers of 6-methyl-1-(1-naphthyl)-2-thioxodihydrouracil were separated and subjected to x-ray diffraction analysis. © 1984 Plenum Publishing Corporation.
