It has been shown that the reaction of 5-methyl(phenyl)pyrimidinylidenemalononitrile with nitric acid leads either to a 2-pyrimidinecarboxylic acid or to a pyrimidinylidene-α-carboxamido(α-carboxamido, α-nitro)-acetonitrile depending on the conditions. © 1993 Plenum Publishing Corporation.
