Abstract: The title reaction in methanol includes the addition of MeO- to the carbonyl group of a pyrrolinone ring followed by ring opening, and the one-electron oxidation of the formed anion results in the formation of a stable nitroxide, as found by cyclic voltammetry and EPR spectroscopy.
